Microsoft Security Patch Advance Notification April 2008

Microsoft has provided guidance on the patches that are to be released next Tuesday with the April Security Patch Release.

This month, there are five Critical security bulletins and three Important bulletins, for Microsoft Office (Visio), Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Project, and Internet Explorer. There will also be five high-priority, non-security updates through Windows Update and Windows Server Update Services, and three high-priority, non-security updates through Microsoft Update and Windows Server Update Services.

Despite Microsoft's continued push towards developing a more secure codebase, including the massive overhaul associated with Windows Vista, this month's patch release points to several Critical remote code execution vulnerabilities that affect all versions of Windows, from Windows 2000, through to Windows 2008. This indicates that there is still a common corpus of code that is shared amongst the different versions of Windows, which has retained the same security vulnerabilities (with the same effects) across versions. Other recent patches that have addressed problems that exist across all Windows versions seem to back this theory.
