Microsoft Security Patch Release August 2009 Advance Notification
Microsoft have announced their intention to release eight Security Updates with August's Security Update release, next Tuesday, the 11th.
The Advance Notification identifies five Critical Updates and four Important Updates, for a total of nine to be released. It should also be remembered that two Critical out-of-cycle patches were released after July's Security Patch Issue and should also be included in patch rollout planning, if they haven't already been applied.
All but one of the patches affect core Windows components in some way, with the remaining, Critical, patch for Office, Visual Studio, ISA Server, and BizTalk Server. Two of the core Windows patches also affect other platforms and applications, with one also being for Client for Mac, and the other for elements of the .NET Framework (though why that isn't a core part of Windows is another question).
As not all supported versions of Windows are equally vulnerable to the issues being patched, some of the patches will not be applicable to different platforms and for those that they are exposed to, the implications range from Critical to Moderate.
As we do every month, S?nnet Beskerming will be releasing briefing packs covering the released patches and any issues surrounding their implementation.
