Microsoft Security Patch Release August 2010 Advance Notification

Microsoft have issued their advance notification for their expected August Security Bulletin release. After only four bulletins were released in July, and an out-of-cycle patch was released this week, Microsoft anticipates releasing fourteen bulletins next week.

Covering Office, Windows, Internet Explorer, and Silverlight, eight of the bulletins are rated as Critical, while the remaining six bulletins, for Office and Windows, are rated Important. All Critical updates are for remote code execution vulnerabilities, along with the Important Office bulletin and one of the Important Windows bulletins. The remaining Important bulletins are for elevation of privilege vulnerabilities.

As has been seen with previous releases, not all bulletins will be applicable to all supported versions of targeted software. The final two Important bulletins, for example, are listed as not being applicable for Windows XP or 2003 systems. Similarly, the third Critical bulletin is only for XP and 2003 systems, it is not listed as being applicable to the remaining supported versions of Windows. In addition to this non-applicability for different platforms, other bulletins are rated to different levels of severity, depending on the platform it is installed on. The fifth Critical bulletin is currently identified as Critical for Windows XP systems only, with every other supported version of Windows being rated as Important for the same update.

Specifically named elements of Office receiving updates are Word and Excel. For the Critical Office update, which targets Word, the Critically affected version is Office 2007, all other versions (including OS X versions) are rated as Important. This is a rather interesting result, that the most recent version of supported software is more at risk than older versions of the same product family.
